Message from the chairperson of the Swaziland Environment Authority

On behalf of the Swaziland Environment Authority and the Conference Organising Committee for the 26th Annual Conference of the Environmental Education Association for Southern Africa, it is my pleasure to invite you to join us for what promises to be a very exciting and meaningful Conference in the Kingdom of Swaziland.

The theme of the Conference, “Actions Towards a Sustainable Future” responds to the challenge that the Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) has posed for us. This conference, following one year after the 4th World Environment Education Congress (WEEC) in Durban and eight months after the 4th International Conference in Environmental Education in Ahmedabad offers us a unique opportunity for the reflection on the strategies and tools which we have adopted to address the ESD and also to assess our progress to date.

The Conference sub-themes will provide an opportunity for us to explore issues of special importance in our Region, such as Education for Disaster Risk Reduction, Sustainable Consumption, ESD Research, and ESD in Formal and Non Formal Education. At this time, when our countries are being rudely awakened to the negative effects of climate change and HIV/AIDS on development, it is imperative that we share experience and work together to make a difference in our Southern Africa Region.

Although Swaziland will be cold in July, and dressed in its yellow “winter garments”, you can be assured of a warm, colourful reception according to Swazi custom.

We look forward to seeing you at the Conference and to having a very meaningful "Indaba".
